What did I do during quarantine?

A blog post from Grade 11 student Jaya highlighting the things she's done over quarantine!

By Jaya Bajaj

Over the past year, we all have been indoors and told not to go out unless it was for essential things, like going to school, work, or the doctors. COVID-19 has made people sit tight and rely on resources like technology. For those who didn’t find any value in the use of tech, now realize that they too will need it. Technology is not the only thing that has been affected by the Coronavirus. Did you know that the Coronavirus was a really good help to the environment and it has helped the ozone layer? This is because when the pandemic hit, and people were forced to stay indoors, harmful gases from factories and vehicles were being used less. The harmful gases that are affecting our planet were able to dwindle down, and we just hope it stays that way. I know having to stay inside all day can become difficult, but let's take some time to appreciate all the hard work and dedication front-line workers put into making our community safer. I consider myself very lucky to have family and friends to talk to during those months, so just know that you aren’t alone and you can always talk to someone.

Since the quarantine lasted for a long time I was able to do many things that I did not have time to do before. It was a closed universe but that didn’t stop me from making the most of it. I am sure most of you caught up on the shows that have been on the list forever and have just gotten into it. Well, I finally got to start the new show The Crown. I recommend this show for people who love bureaucratic drama and depictions of royalty. As many people know ever since quarantine started, the movie/tv industry has declined and since this has happened Hollywood and Bollywood have started to put back the old movies, so I guess it is time to enjoy the classics. Now for the comedy fans, I would recommend Kim's Convenience. It is a comedy set in Downtown Toronto, based around a Canadian-Korean family. Another infamously credited show Friends takes the stage for a show that’s comedic for the whole 22 minutes. I was also able to get my G1 license. Looking back at how long I had been practicing, it became stressful, however, it was all worth it. A piece of advice I have is to practice until the day you have to write your test. I recommend getting to the DMV early in the morning because I assure you there is going to be a huge line-up as it is known for always being busy. Just like any other test you have to write, you're bound to get a little nervous. If this happens remember to take deep breaths, count to three while holding it in, and exhale for four seconds.

I am sure, even before this pandemic, that you have seen people outside jogging, with the whole set-up of fitness clothing and bulky headphones. Well, that was a new hobby I acquired over this time. I enjoy listening to music, and jogging seemed like a simple task, so I set out on doing it, but I lost my breath pretty quickly. I guess it is true that on your first day of fast-paced exercise, you need to take it step by step. Aside from jogging, I had a new basketball net installed just outside my house and it became my go-to activity for after school.

Now that you have heard about the things that I have gotten up to, I would like to hear about what you guys did! Stay updated with our Instagram where we will be asking you guys what new hobbies, interests, activities, and just about everything you guys have done!
