By: Jannat Merchant

Interested in the Royal Canadian Air Force, (RCAF), and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF)? How about developing attributes of good citizenship and leadership, becoming more physically fit, and developing an interest in air activities such as flying or gliding? The Royal Canadian Air Cadets might be for you!

Joining this squadron can provide you with many benefits and opportunities. Cadets learn valuable life and work skills such as teamwork, professionalism, integrity, and leadership. Cadets are also exposed to the air element of the Canadian forces, without any obligation to join the Canadian forces or the military. Through being an air cadet, you can also get your flying license.

The cadets are a commitment. It comes with having to follow basic rules and regulations and a weekly meeting that lasts about 3 hours. Along with these meetings, there are summer camps which you can go to after the end of the school year. There are fitness, aviation, drill, leadership, and survival camps. Each of these provides unique opportunities and skills that you won’t get anywhere else.

Joining the air cadets helps you become a better citizen mentally and physically. It has helped countless people find their own passions and worth in themselves. In fact, astronaut Chris Hadfield was part of the Air Cadets, which guided him to the career he has today.

Brampton has its own Air Cadets squadron called the 132 Spitfire Squadron located at David Suzuki Secondary School. For more information about the squadron and how to enroll, you can visit 132spitfire.ca.
