The Era of Change

Everyone has this power, use it wisely

By Rimjot Gill

As time progresses, social change has occurred across the globe. For example, today racism is less prominent within society, those who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community can express themselves more publicly, and women have gained many rights. Despite this change, there is still so much more that must be done to create a balanced society. The foundation of the current system in place is patriarchy, racism, and homophobia. This must change. Recently, many have expressed this need for change. For example, in 2020, Black Lives Matter protests began all across the globe as many pushed for racial equality. This movement, alongside others such as the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) and Kisaan Rallies, helped educate others on the injustices that many are facing. All of these movements began because someone decided that enough is enough. They chose to fight for what they believe in and started educating others. Slowly, they formed a group large enough to force officials to implement change within society. These groups are composed of “change-seekers”. They seek change from those who have the power to create it, from “change-makers”. The term change seeker does not accurately reflect the power that individuals have.

Every day we see change seekers fighting for what they believe in globally. Black Lives Matter, MMIWG, and Kisaan Rallies are just a few of the various groups of change seekers that are impacting the lives of thousands. Today, these people are change seekers. However, soon they will be change-makers. The future of millions of lives can depend on whether or not one wishes to voice their concerns about an important topic. Everyone has this power, use it wisely.
