How Have Memes Shaped Our Complex Culture?

"The question I ask myself each day is, how have memes shaped our culture?"

By: Khushi Bedi

Over the years, the art of language and communication has evolved. From simple scripture such as hieroglyphics all the way to the use of emojis and various slang used in text messaging and various other forms of communication. The question is: how have memes shaped our culture? Needless to say, they have their own advantages and disadvantages. A meme is a humorous image, video, or piece that is copied and spread throughout social media, or internet users. Memes can be relatable, something embarrassing, or about a person’s daily life. It's a beautiful form of communication and language has evolved from it over the years. Not only can you get a great laugh from it, but it is also a great way to gain influence online on social media platforms. Moreover, it’s also an excellent tool to discuss controversial world issues and what actions could be taken due to the variations of images or text that a meme could include. Oftentimes, it can also distract us from the world around us and act as a stress reliever. I know that we will always enjoy memes after our final assessments. What a relief!

Using the concept of anthropology, language is always evolving and the barrier of it is also decreasing. This is good news to hear. From a very young age, watching cartoons was one method we could learn the language, obviously with the help of subtitles. As our brain grows every day, language is easier to communicate with. And to think about it, language is one, not many. There are many prefixes and roots which come from the Latin or Greek language, which we now know as English words. It's fascinating to ponder how a language has evolved over the years.

Language is superior. Why? Because language has variation in it. For instance, poetry and emojis can be used to express what your emotions and thoughts are, that is if you don't feel like communicating with words. I find that poetry and the use of emojis truly help in what you're feeling. Language is everywhere in this world, and the creation of memes is also from language.

If you are looking for something entertaining, or are feeling bored, stressed, or upset, then perhaps looking through some memes might encourage a few laughs. Check out some on our Instagram page!
