Gone but never forgotten - Kobe Bryant's impact on my life

By Mahabir Bains

Kobe Bryant continues to influence the NBA with 20 years of hard work, dedication, and the tremendous amount of effort that he put into basketball. His impact on basketball is unfathomable, and although there are many Kobe fans across the globe, his influence on each person is extremely different. For example, to some he might be a role model for young kids who like basketball and for others, Kobe might be someone who changed their life through motivation.

Kobe Bryant saw life as an empty box, and believes that it is our job to figure out what to put in our box, or in other words, figure out what our role in life is. “My box was to be extremely ambitious within the sport of basketball. Your box is different than mine... Everybody has their own. It’s your job to try to perfect it and make it as beautiful of a canvas as you can make it. If you have done that, then you have lived a successful life.”

Kobe’s box analogy taught me that success comes in different forms, but the underlying principle in everyone’s box of success is hard work. In other words, success can look like anything, but hard work is what makes it come to life.

In my own life, my box is to become the Kobe Bryant of education, achieve high academic success through hard work. It’s not the same as Kobe’s box, but it can be just as beautiful.
